The members of the Rogue Valley Street Rods hosted their 29th Annual
Southern Oregon Rod & Custom Show on the weekend of February 18th
and 19th, 2006 in Medford, Oregon.
The show was a fundraiser for the Child Development & Rehabilitation Center
of the Oregon Health Sciences University.
This is an inside show and by invitation only, for all the cars invited,
the show is free. Once you show your car, you can’t bring it back again unless
it’s totally redone. Troy Boyd the 2006 Show Chairperson and President of the
Rogue Valley Street Rods said they had 154 entries sent in and excepted 104 of
them for the show.
Al and Don were asked to send in an entry form along with a photo of their
cars and were invited to show! They also sent them VIP passes! 20 of the
invited entries received VIP guest passes. As VIP’s, a room was booked for
them at the Red Lion Hotel in Medford and was comp’ed. Also there was VIP
parking and a Hospitality area at the Show. Shari’s Restaurant a local hangout
and major sponsor of the show, provided free, to VIP’s and entrant’s, all the
pie, cookies, fresh fruit, chili, hot wings, punch and coffee you could eat
and drink all weekend! It was also a nice place to set, visit and view the
show from the third level.
All the entries received a travel-bag full of goodies, a dash plaque and
other great freebies.
This is the first time Al & I have been in this kind of a show. We didn’t
even have stanchions to put around the car, we had to rent them. Set up was on
Friday in the Jackson County Fairgrounds Exposition Center. They filled the
pavilion with cars and the venders were in another building. It was a really
nice set-up.
The weather was cold and clear but warmed quickly. They had a good turn out
for the show, 7,294 paying spectators. When they bought their tickets, at
$6.00 each, the back had the ballot to vote for 5 of the 6 awards, and the
participants voted for the 6th, “Participants Pick“. The ticket
numbers were for the door prizes that they gave away all day.
Every car entered in the show received at least one sponsor’s award plaque!
There were 107 award sponsors and 26 major sponsors that supported the show,
the whole town had banners and signs up for the show. Last year the they gave
“their kids” $25,500.00 and will surpass that this year!
I cant’ tell you how surprised we were when Troy called our number and said
our name for the last award, “People’s Choice” and not only did they give a
really neat award, we’re also getting two jackets that are embroidered with
the logo! We had sat up in the Shari’s hospitality area to watch the awards
and had to go all the way down. What a thrill! The Rogue Valley Rodders are a
great bunch and worked the show from sun up to down. They were always around
helping out in some way. By the time the show was over we felt like old
friends.
So if you’re looking for a new show to try out, think about this one and
you can’t go wrong.
P.S. To the Medford story about the red roadster
parked next to us at the show.
We had set up early on Friday and when we came back
to check on the car, the red roadster was there and they were putting up
their stanchions. We said “HI” to each other and they looked familiar, but
we see so many at rod runs we figured that was were we had seen them before.
We carried on with checking out the cars and didn’t see them again till
Sunday at the end of the show. Al got to talking to them and found out
they’re from Grants Pass now, but were from Watsonville….. and were Road
Angels! Johnny & Glenda Brazil!
Johnny helped me carry out our stanchions after show was over. We were
still on a high from receiving the award and running around like NUTS.
Johnny & Glenda asked us to go out to dinner and Scott & Diane Iveers from
Medford came along. We had a really good visit with Johnny & Glenda and
found out he had grown up with Steve! Small world isn’t it! Angels
everywhere!
