Midnight at the Oasis car show was March 3rd to 5th in
Yuma AZ put on by the Caballeros de Yuma. This was the 14th annual
show. They do a neat thing for an extra fundraiser; they will sell you a
parking space for the weekend! You give them $10.00 and get a stake with your
name on it and go out in the fields and pick the space you like and it’s
yours! No having to go to the park in the dark to get a good space. Sure makes
it easy. And if you don’t like where you are, just move to any other space
that doesn’t have a sign on it.
Friday was check in and the early bird poker run. The poker run was designed
to spotlight the local Government agencies that help protect their city,
county and borders. It started at the U.S. Border Patrol Headquarters Then the
Yuma Police Station, next Fire Station #1 were the Chief offered to let me
drive the hook-n-ladder if he could drive the Vicky…. but Al said no, I
couldn’t play with the fire trucks!
We then went to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office. At each stop there was a
display to check out. The last stop was in the Yuma Palms Shopping Center,
were a reception was set up in the Buffalo Wild Wings cul-de-sac.
The cruise started from here and went to the park for the concert and dance.
It was amazing how many people were along the 6 mile cruise route. Everyone
was waving and shouting, clapping and holding up signs. What a blast!
The Groove Merchants did a great job with the Rock-n-roll music at the dance.
Saturday morning’s poker run started with a buffet breakfast at the Texas
Roadhouse and showed us some interesting sights around Yuma and let us meet
some of the shows sponsors. We got lots of goodies on both poker runs.
With having the parking space, we had our spot when we got to the park after
the poker run. The day was clear and warm. Lots of people were at the show.
The VIP lunch was in the Yuma Civic Center next to the ball fields. The
Saturday night’s concert and dance with Eddie Money and Lou Gramm was really
packed.
Sunday was also clear and warm. Went to the park and visited with Nick &
Debbie Bacon that we had met at the Scottsdale show a few years ago. They have
a new street rod a ’36 Ford. Nick & Debbie are members of Over The Hill Gang
of Phoenix and their Poker Run is coming up in March. We hope that we can make
it next year.
The VIP brunch and awards was back in the Yuma Civic Center. After, we packed
up and headed out. We spent the night in Barstow. Monday morning it rained
most of the way home and you could see the snow on the hills. Well, we had
fun-n-the sun while it lasted and look forward to the next run!
